A Letter to Hairstylists Everywhere

Dear hairstylists,

I want to talk to you about something we don’t often openly discuss: confidence.
It’s easy to look around and assume everyone else has it figured out. The stylist next to you who speaks so effortlessly to her clients, the salon owner who seems to lead with ease, the educator on stage commanding a room full of people, that person on Instagram with a page full of gorgeous shots. Confidence looks obvious from the outside. But internally? It’s often a very different story.

I know, because I’ve lived it.

I’ve spent years building salons, leading teams, and growing a business that many would define as successful. But for a long time, my inner confidence didn’t match the external image. I questioned myself constantly. I worried about overstepping, about coming across the wrong way, about taking up too much space. I was building something meaningful, but I wasn’t yet allowing myself to fully stand in it.

“Confidence Looks Obvious. But Internally, It’s Often a Different Story.”

It took me a while to realise that the real barrier wasn’t lack of experience. It was the story I was telling myself. And if I’m honest, that story was full of self-doubt. It whispered things like, “Don’t be too confident,” or “You’re not quite ready yet,” or “What if people think you’re too much?” And the more I listened to it, the smaller I made myself, even while the world was telling me I was doing big things.

This isn’t just my story. I see it in so many stylists I meet. Incredibly talented, hard-working people who’ve poured years into their craft but still carry that “just a hairstylist” mentality. Society has conditioned us to think that being in a service role means staying quiet, staying humble, not rocking the boat. But let’s be clear: your role is not small.

You help people feel like themselves again. You create space for transformation – physical, emotional, even spiritual. Ironically, you spend everyday building confidence in others. You listen, you guide, you hold space. That’s not “just” anything. That’s a calling.

“You help people feel like themselves again. You create space for transformation – physical, emotional, even spiritual.”

If no one has told you lately: you are allowed to be proud of your work. You are allowed to charge your worth. You are allowed to speak with authority. You are allowed to want more. And you are absolutely allowed to change the story you’ve been telling yourself.

Confidence doesn’t come from waiting until you feel ready. It comes from recognising the value you bring and choosing, every day, to own it just a little more.

“You are not just a hairstylist. You are a professional. An artist. A guide. A transformer of lives.”

So to every hairstylist reading this: stop waiting for someone else to validate you. You don’t need permission. You already have everything you need.

You are not just a hairstylist.

You are a professional. An artist. A guide. A transformer of lives.

And it’s time the world, and you, saw you that way.

With love and respect,

Teréze
